Cleaner Cuyahoga River is subject of a Friday Lyceum program in the Cuyahoga Valley’s Happy Days Lodge

The Cuyahoga River is no longer America’s burning river.

Kyle Dreyfuss-Wells, deputy director of watershed programs for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, will speak Friday in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park on Northeast Ohio’s most-famous river, which is getting cleaner.

Her talk will be at 7 p.m. at the Happy Days Lodge off state Route 303 in Boston Heights. A panel discussion will be held at 8 p.m. Information stations will open at 6 p.m.

The program is part of the park’s Lyceum lecture series.

Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children 3 to 12.

Friday

Icicle hike — Summit Metro Parks is holding an icicle hike on the Glens Trail in Gorge Metro Park. The hike is also known as the Crystal Palace hike for its ice. It will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Meet in the Front Street parking lot in Cuyahoga Falls. 330-865-8065 or www.summitmetroparks.org.

Family campfire — The National Park Service is holding a family campfire program looking at the Underground Railroad with costumed re-enactors at 7 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley. Meet at the Happy Days Lodge off state Route 303 in Boston Heights. 330-657-2752.

Snowshoe hike — The National Park Service is conducting a snowshoe hike from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley. Meet at the Kendall Lake Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township. Free. Equipment rentals are available. If there’s no snow, the outing will become a hike. 330-657-2752.

Bird feeders — The Medina County Park District is hosting a walk-in program on bird feeders and seed from noon to 5 p.m. at the Susan Hambley Nature Center, 4173 Parschen Blvd., Brunswick. The program will continue from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. 330-722-9364 or www.medinacountyparks.com.

Wild doings — The Wilderness Center at 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, Sugar Creek Township, is hosting a bird-banding demonstration at 10:30 a.m. There will also be a program on Ohio’s geology at 1 p.m. and a information session on the Foxfield Preserve for natural burials at 2 p.m. There will be a mixed-media painting class from 2 to 4 p.m. with artist Marlea Hershberger. Beaver Marsh — The National Park Service is holding a hike on the Towpath Trail to seek winter wildlife from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley. Meet at the Ira Trailhead off Riverview Road north of Ira Road in Cuyahoga Falls. Wheelchair and stroller accessible if no snow. 330-657-2752.

Tuesday

Cardio hike — Summit Metro Parks is holding a 2.4-mile cardio hike with a brisk pace and few breaks from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Cascade Valley Metro Park. Meet in the Oxbow Area off Cuyahoga Street in North Akron. Beginners are welcome. 330-865-8065 or www.summitmetroparks.org.

Nature stories — Summit Metro Parks is offering 30-minute nature stories for children 18 months to 3 years old and accompanying adults at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. at the Seiberling Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Road, Akron. Advance sign-ups are required. 330-865-8065 or www.summitmetroparks.org.

Amphibian migration — If weather conditions are right, you can watch migrating amphibians at Sand Run Metro Park in northwest Akron. It will run from 8 to 10 p.m. Meet at the Old Portage Area at 1300 Sand Run Parkway. Call 330-865-8060 after 4 p.m. to find if the program is on. There should be a light rain with temperatures above 45 degrees and darkness for the best results.

Wednesday

Flycatchers and vireos — Summit Metro Parks is offering a look at flycatchers and vireos in a birding program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Seiberling Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Road, Akron. 330-865-8065 or www.summitmetroparks.org.
